The former Holland international was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2013 and helped raise £1m for research into the debilitating condition. The Herald features the death of Ibrox icon Ricksen, who was described as a “true warrior”. The paper also reports former Prime Minister David Cameron lobbied the Queen to back No in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. Mr Cameron made the revelation in a BBC documentary which coincides with the publication of his memoirs.

The Sun features an image of Ricksen in his prime celebrating with his Rangers team mates above the headline “Farewell Fernando”. It reports the father-of-one was hailed as an “inspiration” after losing his six-year battle with MND in a hospice in Airdrie.

The Daily Star also carries tributes to Ricksen and a rallying call from Rangers manager Steven Gerrard for the team to honour the late Dutchman by getting their Europa League campaign off to a winning start.

The former footballer’s death prompted calls for a fresh drive to find a cure for the disease. Ex-Scottish rugby international Doddie Weir, who also suffers from the condition, said: “Some day, hopefully soon, it will be a battle we start winning.”

The Scotsman leads with the “bombshell revelation” that Mr Cameron asked the Queen to intervene in the independence referendum amid fears the Yes campaign was on the verge of victory. The paper also features a picture of Prime Minister Boris Johnson being berated by the father of a sick child during a visit to a London hospital.

The Scottish Daily Mail also features Mr Cameron’s bid to secure the Queen’s help during the independence referendum. The former prime minister told a BBC documentary he suggested the monarch could “raise an eyebrow” about the prospect of Scotland breaking away from the rest of the UK.

“Cameron: I asked the Queen to attack Yes campaign”, is the headline in The National. The paper’s report features reaction from former First Minister Alex Salmond who said the move highlighted the “desperation” of the Better Together campaign.

The Daily Telegraph focuses on Mr Cameron’s “extraordinary admission” about the Scottish independence referendum campaign. The former Prime Minister said he held conversations with the monarch’s private secretary in the build up to the 2014 vote asking her to make a subtle statement to help the Unionist side.
